About Us
Dharmadatu Buddhist Order Inc are a not-for-profit, incorporated association reg no: A1013673T in Western Australia. It is also an income tax exempt charitable institution under Subdivision 50-B of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. The association and its charity are the administrative body for the communication context of the Dharmadatu Buddhist Order, whose primary aim is to provide a secular Dharma and Meditation led, mental health awareness and recovery program through the provision of public classes and an on-going support network assisted by members of the Dharmadatu community within Australia and worldwide by the provision of an on-line reference point.
The Dharmadatu Buddhist Order recognizes the equal validity of all schools of classical Buddhism. It draws on teachings from within the entire Buddhist tradition, with an emphasis placed on the Pali Canon as its primary reference point. As such, it is an amalgamation of all three periods of development, of Buddhist expression. Its approach is secular by nature and in this context the word secular is translated from its root to mean "of this age," and specifically creates a language and approach that speaks to those who were born or raised within a secular western culture, without recourse to religious beliefs or non-western culture. The Order also provides an opportunity for those new to Buddhism to formalise their own commitment to the Dharma journey within that context with the provision of a support network which is its community.
The Dharmadatu Buddhist Order does not promote itself as a new school or tradition. It is the free association of individuals who seek to develop opportunities for human flourishing and who engage with Dharma & Meditation practice as a method for that realisation. You will find on this site details of our public classes together with an opportunity to engage in Dharma study at home, with the assistance of one-to-one tutorial by e mail.
All of our public classes are subject to a $10 charge, and we do promote the ethos of generosity within the community by providing an opportunity to make donations on a voluntary basis.
We hope that you find the contents of our web site to be of help to you.
